Phonetic Realizations of Post-nuclear Accent under Dual-focus Conditions in Standard Chinese

چکیده
Previous studies indicated that the rightmost unit is the default position for bearing nuclear accent in multiple-focus condition in Standard Chinese. The present research investigated the accent realization for dual-focus sentences which has a leftmost nuclear accent. The syntactic form of [Subject Verb (Modifier1) Object1 (Modifier2) Object2] was adopted. A corrective focus was always assigned to left-headed Subject while another focus was assigned to the right constituents in various sentence length, and the leftmost Subject was always realized as the nuclear accent. Both perceptual and phonetic analysis were induced to explore the accent realization. We found that i) When nuclear accents are placed on the left-head, multiple foci could be realized by post-nuclear accents. ii) Both F0 expansion and PFC are related cues of nuclear accent, but the expansion amplitude dependeds on sentence length, longer the sentence structure, smaller the expansion. For nonfinal post-nuclear accent, F0 is not a reliable cue but PFC always has effect. iii) In this particular syntactic structure, there is an obvious prosodic boundary after Object1, which divides this structure into two prosodic phrases with Subject attracting the accent of intonation phrase. vi) Results of perceptual experiment indicate that the SC exists hierarchicalmultiple accents.

A Phonetic and Phonological Analysis of Dual and Multiple Focuses in Standard Chinese
The present study investigates the acoustic manifestation and phonological nature of prominences induced by dual and multiple focuses in Standard Chinese (hereinafter SC). Results show that double focus exerted two prominences in the target sentence and these two prominences performed similar acoustic manifestations. However, under a multiple focus condition, only the rightmost focused constitu...
متن کاملLocal and Global Acoustic Correlates of Information Structure in Bulgarian
In this study the local and global prosodic exponents of information structure are examined in the production of six Bulgarian question-answer elicited sentences under different focus conditions (broad focus and non-contrastive and contrastive narrow focus). Local cues are the phonetic properties of the nuclear accented syllables, while global cues reflect broader phonetic patterns in the inter...
متن کاملProsodic Markings of Complex NP Focus, Syntax, and the Pre-/Post-focus String
The prosodic realization of focus can vary depending on various factors such as type of focus (e.g., information focus, corrective focus), morphosyntax (whether or not a language has a morpho-syntactic marker of focus), and intonational phonology of language, and thus is language-specific. On one hand, head-prominence languages such as English, German, and Greek, mark prominence through the use...
متن کاملPhonetic Implementation Must Be Learnt: Native versus Chinese Realization of Focus Accent in Dutch
The strategies adopted by native speakers of Dutch and Chinese speakers with different levels of proficiency in Dutch in the realization of degrees of focus enhancement were significantly different on six variables. The participants with higher proficiency did not outperform the learners with lower proficiency. The Chinese subjects appear to abstain from phonetic enhancement rather than transfe...
متن کاملThe Status of Vowel Devoicing in Bulgarian: Phonetic or Phonological?
Vowel devoicing at phrase boundaries is shown to depend on sentence mode (statement, question) and information structure (non-contrastive vs. contrastive and broad vs. narrow focus), which affect the type of nuclear accent and boundary tone. In li-questions, considerably less devoicing of the vowels before the phrase boundary is found than in other conditions, because the rising boundary contou...
